GALENA

Ladywash Mine, Eyam, Derbyshire

A good example of galena (lead ore) with fluorite from Derbyshire. The galena has a brilliant metallic lustre on the broken surface. This specimen was collected in 1971 and is from an old collection.

Lead has been mined in Britain since Roman times, mostly from Derbyshire and the Northern Pennines, and these upland areas are littered with disused mines.

Please note: Because it is an ore of lead, galena is extremely heavy for its size.
