GALENA (LEAD ORE) - Machen Quarry, Caerphilly, Wales
« backGALENA
Machen Quarry, Caerphilly, Wales
A fine example of galena (lead ore) with a brilliant metallic lustre on the broken surface. This specimen is almost all galena.
Galena has been mined in Britain since Roman times, mostly from the Pennines, but also in Wales. The area around the village of Machen in Mid Glamorgan has seen several episodes of lead mining. The large road stone quarry at Machen is working dolomitic limestone and lead veins are frequently encountered. This specimen is from an old collection.
Please note: Because it is an ore of lead, galena is extremely heavy for its size. This piece weighs almost 1 kilogram.
