Frosterley, County Durham
Frosterley marble is a grey limestone containing beautiful white fossil corals. It is quarried on the banks of the River Wear near the village of Frosterley. Its dark colour is caused by natural bitumen.
Although not a true marble in the geological sense (true marbles are recrystallised by heat and pressure), it is has been prized for centuries. It has been used all over the world from Durham Cathedral to the Anglican Cathedral in Mumbai, India.
