FOX TOR BRECCIA (cut and polished slice) - Dartmoor, Devon
« backFOX TOR BRECCIA
Fox Tor, Dartmoor, Devon
A highly unusual, if not unique, type of breccia from Dartmoor. It consists of slivers of granite (feldspar and quartz) rimmed by black tourmaline (schorl) and set into a matrix of quartz. It's a bizarre rock that's very interesting under a hand lens or low power microscope.
Precisely how this rock was formed is not known, but it was initially the result of shattering of the Dartmoor granite deep underground under high pressure as the granite was cooling.
This slice is from an old collection. It is polished on both sides.
