FOSSILS FROM THE ICE AGE
An ice age is a period when the Earth's climate cools sufficiently to form ice caps at the poles and on mountain ranges. There have been at least five ice ages in the Earth's history and we are currently living in what is known as the Quaternary Ice Age which started 2.6 million years ago.
The present Ice Age has experienced extreme climate variations over the last 500,000 years. About every 100,000 years the climate has swung dramatically from periods of extreme cold (glaciations) to warm periods (interglacials) when the climate was warmer than today. The fossils in this category are from the present Ice Age and therefore are very young in geological terms. They include some of the most impressive creatures to have lived on the planet and range from cold climate mammoth, woolly rhinoceros and reindeer to the warm climate hippo, lion and hyaena.
