A gorgeous section of a fossilised tree branch from the USA showing four knot holes. It is from an old collection and the provenance is not known.
The wood has been completely 'petrified' - all the living tissue has literally been turned to stone, in this case the mineral quartz.
This is a lovely specimen - looking exactly like a modern tree branch until you pick it up!
