FOSSILISED WOOD

Whitby, North Yorkshire

A cut and polished piece of a log of fossilised wood that was found on the beach at Whitby. Whitby is famous for the variety of partially fossilised wood known as jet (a variety of lignite), but this example is dense and heavy and has been completely fossilised.

It most likely originates from the boulder clay in the cliffs and has been transported to Whitby from further north during the Ice Age, locked in the ice sheet.
