FOSSIL SEA BED

Part of an ancient sea floor
with fossil shells

55 million years old

Oldhaven Sandstone
Aveley, Thurrock, Essex

These fossil shells represent the sea floor from the end of the Palaeocene period, the geological period immediately following the extinction of the dinosaurs, when part of Essex and Kent was covered with a shallow, sub-tropical sea.

Over millions of years these shells became cemented into a sandstone belonging to the Oldhaven Beds (part of the Harwich Formation).  These shell seams have yielded at least 60 species of fossils, including numerous sharks teeth.

This large and rare specimen was collected in 1990 from a quarry that is now infilled and beneath the A13 trunk road.
