FOSSIL WHELK

Neptunia contraria
(Left handed whelk)

3 million years old

Red Crag.  Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex

The Red Crag Sea had an extraordinarily rich diversity of shellfish, with hundreds of species. The shells are fragile, and look like modern shells, but they are real fossils.

They include Neptunia contraria - the ‘left-handed whelk’, which spirals in the opposite direction to almost all other gastropods.

This fossil is from an old collection. Presented in a plastic display box.
