Trionyx

Approx. 34 million years old
(Oligocene period)

Hamstead, Isle of Wight

The north-west coast of the Isle of Wight provides an important succession through rocks of late Eocene – early Oligocene age known as the Solent Group.  Some of these rocks were deposited at a time when this area was similar to the Florida Everglades and inhabited by turtles, crocodiles and snakes.  Beautifully ornate pieces of the shell of the turtle Trionyx can be found. The only surviving species of this turtle now lives in Africa
