FOSSIL TROPICAL PLANT

Alethopteris

300 million years old

Montceau-les-Mines, France

A beautifully-preserved fossil frond of an extinct tree known as a seed fern from the tips of a coal mine in France.  Presented in a lidded gift box.

300 million years ago in the Carboniferous period, Britain and France were situated on the equator and were covered by tropical rain forest with giant trees and strange fern-like plants.  Much of this vegetation was compressed into layers of coal, but some plants left impressions in mud, which eventually hardened into stone.
