FOSSIL SPONGE PRESERVED
IN A POLISHED FLINT PEBBLE

80 million years old

A delightful little pebble of flint preserving a fossil sponge. It has been polished on the top surface to reveal the sponge.
It is from an old university museum collection and is presented in a vintage glass museum display box.

During the late Cretaceous period Britain was submerged beneath a tropical sea.  On this sea floor was laid down white, limy mud, which became the familiar soft limestone we know as Chalk.  Sponges that lived on this sea floor are often preserved as fossils in the Chalk.

In Victorian times pebbles of flint were commonly polished as curios and can often be found in museum collections. A nice little item!
