FOSSIL SEED FERN
Macroneuropteris

310 million years old

Mazon Creek Fossil Beds
Braidwood, Illinois, USA

A split ironstone concretion showing the positive and negative of a beautifully-preserved seed fern leaf from the famous Mazon Creek fossil beds. The foliage of Macroneuropteris consists of very large frond-like leaves.

Mazon Creek is a tributary of the Illinois River, situated some 90 miles south-west of Chicago. It has given its name to the remarkable fossils that have been found, mostly from the spoil heaps of the strip coal mines that were operating in the area over the last century. More than 200 species of fossil plants have been found here.

Presented in a lidded gift box.
