Beautifully preserved fossil fern in an ironstone nodule

310 million years old

Mazon Creek Fossil Beds
Braidwood, Illinois, USA

A small ironstone concretion showing a seed fern frond from the famous Mazon Creek fossil beds. It is presented in a shallow box with a clear plastic lid.

Mazon Creek is a tributary of the Illinois River, situated some 90 miles south-west of Chicago. It has given its name to the remarkable fossils that have been found, mostly from the spoil heaps of the strip coal mines that were operating in the area over the last century. More than 200 species of fossil plants have been found here.
