A nice example of a Carboniferous fossil plant from a coalfield in Belgium. Preserved in brown mudstone.
In the Carboniferous period Belgium was on the equator and covered by tropical rain forest with giant trees and strange fern-like plants. Much of this vegetation became layers of coal, but some plants left impressions in mud which hardened into stone.
