420 million years old
Wenlock Limestone
Dudley, West Midlands
Part of the sea bed in the Silurian Period with corals, brachiopods, crinoid stems and parts of other creatures. This specimen was probably collected over 100 years ago and has a delightful hand-written label on the reverse.
The Wenlock Limestone is the remains of a tropical reef that was formed in a warm, shallow sea. The limestone has beautifully preserved the many different animals that were living on and around the reef at the time and enables us to build up a remarkably complete picture of these ancient reef communities.
