FOSSIL SCALLOP
3 million years old
Aequipecten opercularis
Bawdsey, Suffolk
The queen scallop is a marine bivalve mollusc. This specimen is complete with one auricle (the ear-like extension at the top of the shell) much larger than the other.
This creature lived at the very end of the Pliocene period, just before the onset of the Ice Age. The Red Crag consists of shelly sands laid down in a shallow sea. The name derives from its reddish colour, and crag is an East Anglian word for shells. The colour is due to the oxidation of iron compounds
