FOSSIL OREDONT TOOTH

Merycoidodon

30 million years old (Oligocene)

White River Formation. South Dakota, USA

Merycoidodon is an extinct mammal resembling a pig in appearance, but more closely related to the camel.

The number of fossils found suggests that at that time oreodonts were as common in South Dakota as zebras are today on the Serengeti.
