FOSSIL MOLLUSC SHELLS

20 million years old

Bordeaux Region, France

These marine shells (mostly gastropods) look like modern shells but are genuine fossils.  They are found in a part of France that was submerged beneath warm seas during the Miocene period.

The fossils from this location are usually found in loose, sandy rock and so this specimen is a ‘composite’, i.e. several fossils have been set into the original sand which has been hardened for preservation.
