Otodus megalodon

Over 5 million years old

Red Crag. Felixstowe, Suffolk

A classic fossil from the Red Crag of Suffolk. It is derived from Miocene deposits and was rounded by natural abrasion on the sea floor millions of years ago before it was buried by the Red Crag sand. The remarkable surface ‘gloss’ is entirely natural and has no adequate scientific explanation.

The history of this specimen is not known. It's about 3.5 inches in size and therefore not a large tooth for this species (megalodon teeth from the USA can be up to 6 inches), but it is typical of the fossil teeth found in the Red Crag ‘coprolite’ pits of Suffolk in the 19th century.

The specimen is complete and undamaged apart from a small area of the root. It is presented in a vintage glass museum display box.
