FOSSIL LEFT-HANDED WHELK

120 million years old (Cretaceous)

Betul, Madhya Pradesh, India

A very unusual fossil gastropod known as a 'left-handed' whelk.  This little whelk is ‘contrary’ as it spirals the 'wrong way', in other words in the opposite direction to almost every other gastropod.

The inside of the shell is lined with sparkling quartz crystals.

Something for the collector of oddities! Presented in a plastic display box.
