OLIGOCENE FOSSIL LEAVES FROM THE BOVEY BALL CLAY

About 30 million years old
(Oligocene epoch)

Bovey Formation
(Southacre Clay and Lignite Member)

New Bridge Clay Pit, Chudleigh Knighton, near Bovey Tracey, Devon

Rare carbonised plant remains from the Bovey Formation, a deposit of sands, clays and lignite, probably over 300 metres thick, that lies in a basin extending from Bovey Tracey to Newton Abbot in Devon.

The deposit is the result of the degradation of the neighbouring Dartmoor granite and was laid down in a lake during the late Eocene and Oligocene periods. Most of the fossilised plant material is thought to be from the tree Sequoia.

The Bovey Formation is a major source of ball clay – a fine-grained clay used by the pottery industry.
