« backFOSSIL LEAF
48 million years old
Green River Shales, Uintah County, Utah, U.S.A.
Along the present-day Green River in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, beautifully preserved fossil leaves are found in a layer of fine-grained shale. They were preserved at the bottom of a lake that existed in the Eocene period, when this part of the U.S.A. had a wet, tropical climate.
This fossil leaf is from a species of flowering plant in the lychee family. A lovely little fossil.
