Graptolites were colonial animals that drifted in the surface waters of the oceans during the Palaeozoic Era. They are found in rocks in all pats of the world. This type is known as a dendroid graptolite which formed large, fan-shaped communities.
This fossil shows a part of a graptolite colony preserved in a layer in the rock.
