FOSSIL FISH - 110 million years old - Brazil
« back110 million years old
Araripe Basin, Brazil
The Lower Cretaceous rocks of the Araripe Basin of Brazil contain some of the best-preserved fossils in the World. The most famous of these are the fossil fish, which are found enclosed within limestone nodules in strata known as the Santana Formation.
The fish sometimes have their soft tissue preserved, including muscle fibres and even stomach contents, which indicates that the process of fossilisation may have begun soon after the fish were entombed in the mud on the floor of a lagoon.
This fossil is not quite complete but a good example showing the scales particularly well. It is from an old collection and was purchased by the former owner several decades ago.
Presented in a lidded gift box.
