During the Devonian period Britain lay just south of the equator and the climate was hot and arid. A freshwater lake existed where Orkney now lies which contained large numbers of fish that have been preserved in beautiful detail.
This fossil is from the Caithness Flagsone – part of the Old Red Sandstone. The scales have been scattered as the carcass lay on the sea bed all those millions of years ago.
