During the Devonian period Britain lay just south of the equator and the climate was hot and arid. A freshwater lake existed where Caithness now lies which contained large numbers of fish that have been preserved in beautiful detail.
This beautiful fossil is from the ‘Caithness Flagstone’ – part of the Old Red Sandstone.
