FOSSIL CRINOIDS

190 million years old

Pentacrinites fossilis

Lower Lias. Black Ven Marls

Charmouth, Dorset

A section of the 'Pentacrinites Bed' from the Lower Lias of the Dorset coast. It is slightly waterworn but still a nice piece.

This specimen is notable because the calcite stems and arms are coated with golden pyrite. To be fully appreciated it should be viewed with a hand lens.  It was collected in 1975.

Crinoids (also called sea lilies) look like plants but they are marine animals related to starfish and sea urchins. Most species were attached to the seafloor by a stalk but some were free-swimming. The mouth was surrounded by numerous feeding arms. They are still living today but were much more numerous in the prehistoric past.
