FOSSIL BIVALVE (SPONDYLUS) - VERY LARGE EXAMPLE WITH BOTH VALVES - 80 million years old - Kent
« backFOSSIL BIVALVE
Spondylus spinosus
80 million years old
(Cretaceous period)
Birchington, near Margate, Kent
A superb, very large example of the classic fossil bivalve Spondylus spinosus from the Upper Chalk of the north Kent coast. Both valves are present, one offset from the other.
A few of the spine bases are present. One valve is not quite complete (see photo) but this doesn't distract from what is a lovely fossil.
It is thought to have been collected in the 1960s or earlier. Presented in a vintage, glass-topped museum display box.
