FOSSIL BIVALVE SHELL
PRESERVED IN A FLINT NODULE

80 million years old
(Cretaceous period)

Dover, Kent

Fossil shells, such as this bivalve Inoceramus, are commonly encountered in the Chalk of southern England, but you don't often find examples as good as this.

The fossil shell is preserved on, and partially encapsulated by a small nodule of flint.
