The Red Crag Sea had an extraordinarily rich diversity of shellfish, with hundreds of species. The shells are fragile, and look like modern shells, but they are real fossils.
The fossils have been stained reddish brown by iron in the groundwater, hence the name Red Crag for the formation. Crag is a local name for sandy soil.
This fossil is a gorgeous reddish-brown colour and is complete. It was collected in 1987 and is from an old collection.
Buckanay Farm Pit is private and is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Collecting fossils is now restricted.
