Fossils have been familiar objects well back into Stone Age times and over the years different interpretations have been given to them.  In the 17th and 18th centuries their origin was the subject of major dispute among philosophers, zoologists and naturalists.

This superb booklet describes some of the better known groups of fossils that are associated with folklore, both ancient and more modern, and explains the origins of the names that have been given to them, from snake stones, screw stones and star stones to devil's toenails, the Delabole Butterfly and the Dudley Locust.
