FOREST MARBLE

165 million years old

Forest Marble is a limestone which is packed with Jurassic fossils. It isn’t technically a marble in the geological sense (true marbles are recrystallised by heat and pressure) but it does take a good polish.

The name comes from the Wychwood Forest in Oxfordshire where it was first studied. It contains fragments of shells, mostly bivalves, but also crinoids and echinoid spines. It has also been the source of numerous dinosaur bones.

It was formed in a tropical climate in shallow water where the shells were broken up by wave or current action. Forest Marble is a very useful building stone.

One side has been polished. The other side is natural, showing numerous fossils.
