Until the Spanish discovered emeralds in Columbia in the 16th century, the mines of Egypt, near the Red Sea Coast, were the only significant source of emeralds known to the Western world.
Emeralds are a green variety of the mineral beryl. These rough stones are not gem quality and are from an old collection.
