Windy Knoll Quarry, Castleton, Derbyshire
Hydrocarbons, or natural bitumens, occur in Derbyshire in a variety of forms; usually they are soft, elastic or sticky, but occasionally they can be hard and brittle. Elaterite is the name given to a soft variety of bitumen that occurs at Windy Knoll Quarry.
These hydrocarbons originated from the soft parts of fossil marine organisms by distillation of the organic matter – the starting point for oil generation. This process was aided by the heat of magma injected into the adjacent rocks.
This sample is thought to have been collected in the early 1970s and is from an old collection. It takes the form of a sticky, viscous mass. It is provided in a new plastic display box.
Please note: The disused quarry at Windy Knoll is of international importance for these rare bitumen deposits and is regarded as unique in Britain. It is part of a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and collecting is no longer permitted.
