ECLOGITE

An unusual rock containing garnets that originates in the mantle and was formed under immense heat and pressure

Creag Dhubh Neill, SE of Glenelg, Highland Region, Western Scotland

Eclogite is a colourful, dense and heavy rock with pink garnets and green omphacite (a variety of augite). It was originally ocean crust and was formed as the ocean floor was forced down or ‘subducted’ deep into the mantle by plate tectonics, converting the igneous rock basalt into the much rarer metamorphic rock eclogite.

Eclogite is rare in the UK but does occur in the complex metamorphic sequences of north-west Scotland.

This example is from an old university collection. The faces are cut to a very smooth surface but are unpolished.
