ECLOGITE

An unusual rock containing garnets that originates in the mantle and was formed under immense heat and pressure

Nordfjord, Sogne og Fjordane, Norway

Eclogite is a colourful, dense and heavy rock with pink garnets and green omphacite (a variety of augite). It was originally ocean crust and was formed as the ocean floor was forced down or ‘subducted’ deep into the mantle by plate tectonics, converting the igneous rock basalt into the much rarer metamorphic rock eclogite.
However, new research has established that there are several types of eclogite, and rocks other than basalt form eclogites given sufficiently high pressures and temperatures.

These examples are from Norway and were formed 400 million years ago as ocean crust was subducted beneath the giant Caledonian mountain range. The eclogite is now at the surface after 400 million years of erosion.
