ECLOGITE (hand specimen) - Norway
« backECLOGITE
A highly attractive rock containing garnets that originates in the mantle and was formed under immense heat and pressure
Nordfjord, Sogne og Fjordane, Norway
Eclogite is a colourful, dense and heavy rock with pink or red garnets and green omphacite (a variety of augite). It was originally ocean crust and was formed as the ocean floor was forced down or ‘subducted’ deep into the mantle by plate tectonics, converting the igneous rock basalt into the much rarer metamorphic rock eclogite.
This example from Norway was formed 400 million years ago as ocean crust was subducted beneath the giant Caledonian mountain range. It is now at the surface after 400 million years of erosion.
