ECLOGITE - Bavaria, Germany
« backECLOGITE
An unusual rock containing garnets that originates in the mantle and was formed under immense heat and pressure
Weißenstein mountain, Stammbach, Bavaria, Germany
Eclogite is a colourful, dense and heavy rock with pink garnets and green omphacite (a variety of augite). It was originally ocean crust and was formed as the ocean floor was forced down or ‘subducted’ deep into the mantle by plate tectonics, converting the igneous rock basalt into the much rarer metamorphic rock eclogite.
This example is from the Münchberg metamorphic complex in Bavaria which is built up of rare rocks such as eclogite. It is from an old University collection.
