This remarkable book lists over 2,000 fossiliferous localities in England, Scotland and Wales, arranged in alphabetical order by county. It was compiled by the Palaeontographical Society and was the result of several years work. There are 71 contributors. many of whom were distinguished specialists.

Each entry describes position of the locality (unfortunately without grid references), the type of exposure, followed by some indication of the fossils to be found.  Each section is followed by an extensive list of references. Of the entries, 1352 are Palaeozoic, 571 Mesozoic, 64 Tertiary, and 25 Quaternary.

As the directory was published in 1954, most of the localities are obviously now only of historical interest.
