DEVONSHIRE MARBLE (THREE SMALL POLISHED SLICES) - Torquay, Devon
« backDEVONSHIRE MARBLE
Three small cut and polished slices
380 million years old
Torquay, Devon
The colourful marbles from Devon are some of the most beautiful in Britain. Popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries for vases, mantelpieces, tabletops, church monuments and other items, the stone was worked by the marble manufacturers in the seaside towns of Torquay and Babbacombe.
These are three thin (1 to 2 mm) polished slices which could be used in jewellery.
A two volume, full colour work on the Devon marble industry (Devonshire Marbles: their geology, history and uses by Gordon Walkden) was published in 2015 by the Geologists' Association and is highly recommended. Click here for details.
