'DESERT ROSE' (SAND ROSE)

An attractive natural sculpture formed of gypsum crystals

Shelford Quarry, Sturry, near Canterbury, Kent

Desert roses are groups of gypsum crystals with inclusions of sand.

They are very rare in Britain, but they were once found in Palaeocene sands the the cliffs of Herne Bay and at the now infilled Shelford Quarry, near Canterbury.

This is a very good example.
