'DESERT ROSE' OF BARITE

A natural sculpture formed of barite crystals

North Africa

Desert roses are remarkable natural crystal formations.  They are rosette-shaped groups of crystals with inclusions of sand.
They're usually of selenite (gypsum) but this example is of barite.

Desert roses normally form only in arid, sandy environments such as the Sahara Desert.
