DERBYSHIRE BLACK MARBLE

By John Michael Tomlinson

(second hand copy in very good condition)

Derbyshire black marble, or more correctly Ashford Black Marble, is the name given to a dark limestone quarried from mines near Ashford-in-the-Water, in Derbyshire.

It is not a true marble in the geological sense but when cut and polished it produces a beautiful shiny black surface. It was often inlaid with other decorative stones to produce table tops, vases and other decorative objects.

This is the definitive and comprehensive account of Derbyshire Black Marble, covering the mining, and its uses in ornaments, jewellery and inlay over the years.

Published by the Peak District Mines Historical Society (Special Publication No. 4). 1996. Soft cover. 95 pages. Colour and black and white photographs.
