DENDRITES

Branching 'dendritic' minerals which resemble fossilised plants

Solnhofen, Bavaria, Germany

A dendrite is a mineral that develops with a multi-branching, tree-like form.  The patterns are often mistaken for fossil plants.

This classic example from Germany consists of an incrustation of iron and manganese minerals along joints in fine-grained limestone.  For a photograph of one of the famous Solnhofen limestone quarries click on the 'Image Gallery' tab above.

This is a superb example. One of the best we have had.
