CUT AND POLISHED FLINT
CONTAINING FOSSIL SPONGES

Cromer, Norfolk

A beautifully polished flint retaining its white rind or 'cortex' and containing the ghostly remains of fossilised sponges.

Flint is made of quartz, or silica, and was formed in soft, limy mud on the floor of the Chalk Sea some 80 million years ago.  Over millions of years the white mud containing the flint nodules was compacted to form chalk, which is the bedrock of much of Southern England. Occasionally flint can contain the fossilised remains of creatures that lived in this tropical sea, such as sponges.

It has been skillfully polished to a mirror-like finish by a lapidary craftsman.
