CROCODILE SCUTE

30 million years old

Hamstead, Isle of Wight

Crocodiles have a protective exoskeleton or 'dermal armour' consisting of bony plates or scutes, much like the shell of a turtle.

Crocodiles survived the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period and their remains are found in several British rocks of Eocene and Oligocene age.

This small fossil crocodile scute is provided in a plastic box with label. It is from the Hamstead Beds on the Isle of Wight and dates from the Oligocene period.  It is from an old collection.
