Part of the stem of an ancient tree fern recovered from the beach at Sandown. It has been completely silicified (turned to quartz).
There is much detail on the irregular surface, with cavities lined with sparkling quartz crystals.
This fossil originated in the cliffs in rock strata known as the Wessex Formation (part of the Wealden Group).
An interesting and unusual specimen.
