CRETACEOUS CHERT

100 million years old

Upper Greensand
Cretaceous Period (Albian stage)

Shapwick Grange Quarry,
near Rousdon, East Devon

A nice example of chert from the Upper Greensand chert beds in Shapwick Grange Quarry. It's better than it looks in the photos, and has a blueish tinge.

Chert is a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of microcrystalline crystals of quartz.
