AMMONITE

120 million years old

Cretaceous Period (Lower Aptian Stage)

Near the Volga River,
Saratov, Russia

A beautiful ammonite with an iridescent shell.  Preserved in grey limestone.

In places the shell is missing revealing the calcite crystal interior and the ornate suture lines which mark the divisions between the internal chambers.
